Grimm Fairy Tale RomanceYou look at us and Sigh the Sigh of Envy— A deep heaving breath— How Green are your Lungs? And you Smile like a Child Just learning to Lie: Eyes a shade too Hungry; Lips a bit too Lean; Voice just two drops Too full of Saccharine Though we have What you Covet:A Fairy Tale Romance. It’s not a first edition, Ah, But what a beautiful Cover! Isn’t that what matters? It’s be/spoke/n for. These Gilt edged pages are Securely (Cruelly) Bound— Like a Whale Bone Corset Made with pale, Pale, Kidskin And crimson suede. With jewel-tone Threads Silk danced with a Needle, Piercing and Weaving Embroidery Eye-nets:How easily they caught you, And everyone else. Did you ever bother with a Paper Cut? Shape-shifting Feral folktales Are not the stories that you know. These Woods are Dark, And Deep, And the Roots are all Tangled.- - We cannot escape - - The Wolves have gathered, But they are Within, Not Without. His Bite is worse than his Howl,And my Claws keep Sharpening:We have both drawn bloodTo protect Hearts That are probably no longerWorth saving. Do you think that’s Romantic? We had a Castle once,Now it lies in a State of DecayAnd is being Reclaimed byThe Wild, Wild Woods. The two of us still shelterAmidst the Ruins,The Dereliction of Beauty On full display with its Crumbling walls Held together by Sleeping Ivy,For nothing else dwells hereThat lives anymore. Do you Envy our Broken Crowns? In our once Proud GardenThe overgrown Rose Briars Are Armed Floral SkeletonsWithout Blooms, butKnives a Plenty. And I have wondered: Would it be a Tragedy (or tragedy more deserving of a smaller case?)If it came tumbling downWhile I lie on my Bed of Stone Beneath my Cobweb Coverlet? Our Story would end Together— And wouldn’t you call that Ever So Romantic? There will be no Happily Ever After,Merely theseTimes After Happiness That I had Once. So, Do you still Covet This Poison Fruit? These Woods are Dark, And Deep,And the Roots are all Tangled— Maybe We will Settle In the Deadfall....

Prose
Divining in the DarkI. It is Summer and Cecelia dreams of Magpies. Omens flock to her at midnight -- another night, another nightmare -- dark wings crowd her and she is increasingly claustrophobic. The winged visions never let her sleep for long. Cecelia wakes with a start, heart hammering against the walls of her chest. She still hears their croaking calls. Buzzing about her brain is a relic from her childhood, learned and abandoned on the playground, the words emerging from the depths of time like cicadas refusing to be silenced: The Magpie Divination Rhyme. One for sorrow,Two for joy,Three for a girl,Four for a boy,Five for silver,Six for gold,Seven for a secret,Never to be told. She looks over at her husband, and longs to wake him, to give his shoulders a shake, but pulls her hand back. What would she say that she hasn’t said already? What could she say aloud that she can’t say to herself, that only her dreams can articulate? The magpies have come for our shine, any shine they can find. They are piratical in purpose, merry plunderers of anything that sparkles, glimmers, shimmers, and gleams. They’ve already taken the sparkle from our eyes. Something used to shimmer in the air around us, some indescribable sort of heat and magic -- but no longer. There is a patina replacing the gilded gleam on our rings, and it dyed our fingers green. When you saw me remove it to scrub my hand clean, you glanced at the trash can, and I swear it was a dare; just a flick of the eye, a mere movement in a millisecond, but the moment has stretched out forever... The silence is lead heavy with unsaid words and she is pregnant with emotions past due for release. With unshed tears in her eyes, Cecelia stares at the back of Alexander's head and wonders for the hundredth time what to say.II. In Autumn, Cecelia dreams of Ravens. There is one among the many, singular and otherworldly, and faithful to a fault. It stands on her chest, one taloned foot sunk into her breast. It knows her secrets. In those bright, black eyes are a preternatural perception and wisdom beyond her comprehension. That raven comes to her: grasping the truths of her troubled heart; perceiving her in full. Without fail, in every dream, didactically it stares, and grips, and cocks it’s head in question. What now? What will you do now? She doesn’t know. She never knows. Cecelia was never good at puzzles, or riddles, or prizing out answers from the mysteries within. Her sensitive soul causes her to shy away from introspection, terrified of the augury being pecked on the inside of her eyelids. They vex her like a tangle, follow her like a huntsman, and cling to her like a curse -- these omens are as sustaining as a horn-of-plenty full of sand. She is more isolated than she was before it all began, for fear that they would see the degradation in her eyes. There is no one to talk to about what toll the occult harassment has upon her, about the havoc that it wreaks, and the mental, emotional, and bodily suffering that she is helpless against. She is haunted at night, and more and more in the day; for try as she might, she cannot forget the foreboding or turn away when she blinks. Who can she turn to who could understand? Not him -- not Alexander. He has become driftwood in the vastness of her ocean, floating towards an unknown shore somewhere over the horizon, too distant to view. What now? What will you do now? Cecelia and Alexander have taken off their rings. Verdigris stains still circle both their fingers, like rot and accusations, like silences and whispers sunk deep into their skin. They still sleep in the same room, but lie as far apart as possible without falling off the edge of the bed and the world. In her mind, she would never stop falling -- falling through feathers and questions like stinging nettles, with no relief in sight. What now? What will you do now? She has been thinking of migration, how her memories go around, and around, but never away. The weather is turning, and she wonders if the trees feel as bared as she does and as violated by the birds nesting amongst their falling crowns. She removes all the red from her closet -- all the crimson, vermilion, scarlet, and rose -- she can't look at herself clothed in those hues in the same way again. Was she beautiful before she began wasting away? Alexander once thought so, but now she isn't so sure. Cecelia contemplates change: another state, another country, with a temperate climate to escape the coming cold. Would he fly with her if she extended her hand? She is crippled by indecision and tortured by visions.III. In the Winter Cecelia dreams of Crows. A witness to a murder, she wakes with a brittle smile and grim determination, feeling the steel in her spine. At last she knows what to say, even better, she knows what to do. She tells her husband that they have allowed themselves to go hungry rather than feed one another and they are both to blame. Now, they must either give in or let go. They must partake of these crows, or they will pick their bones clean and become skeletons clinging to the edge of their battlefield bed, rather than to the fullness of each other as they once did. It is time for a Reckoning. This is Cecelia and Alexander at the crossroads: they are carefully considering which fork’s tine is the sharpest, acutely aware of the chill on their fingers bare of promises once worn, and charting the path ahead by the feathers on their tongues. IV. Spring arrived, as it is wont to do after Winter, and thawed the world. Graciously, it never comes empty handed. Renewal and Migrations are among the many gifts it brings. Blue Jays watch from above, garrulous, aggressive and beautiful. They are the surprising splashes of color in the sea of green conifers: bright sky azure, and cumulus cloud white, and stripes of leftover midnight. They are the far-gazing Sentinels of the Reckoning. In a few month’s time, the season will change, and the Magpies are waiting in the wings. ———————————————————————
